J. Michael Murphy, MBA, CPCC, ACC
I believe coaching is primarily about discovery, self-awareness, and choice. With over 30 years of leadership experience in global organizations, I empower my clients to discover their own answers and support them in making important choices in their professional and personal lives.
My approach is rooted in active listening, curiosity, and asking clarifying questions, which helps clients trust that I’ll always be present with an empathic ear. I challenge perspectives, eliminate roadblocks, and help clients live with intentionality, uncovering possibilities aligned with their values and purpose. My goal-oriented nature ensures that we consistently work towards attaining their stated outcomes.
In 2018, I launched a brand consultancy and offer executive and leadership coaching to motivated senior leaders and business owners who want to be the best they can be, want the future to look different from today, have a growth mindset, and/or are seeking to balance the demands of work and family life. Prior to becoming a certified coach, I held leadership roles in advertising agencies such as Grey, Saatchi & Saatchi, DDB, and Bates Worldwide. For 20 years I provided strategic and creative direction to major brands such as Cascade, Snickers, Pedigree, Prudential, and Nokia. This included working 5 years in Paris establishing an agency for Mars Pan-European brands. I also have a decade of experience at professional and legal services firms like PwC, Blank Rome, and Squire Patton Boggs, leading marketing, and global brand communications. The combination of my management experience and coaching best practices allows me to provide a broader perspective to clients. I also use 360° assessments, Gallup’s Strength Finders, and Mindfulness practices to uncover skill gaps and areas of development.
I hold a BA in Economics from Penn State University and an MBA in Marketing and
Organizational Behavior from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. Developing people and teams was a strength throughout my corporate career and I was drawn to professional executive coaching to expand my impact. I became a professional certified coach through the Co-Active® Training Institute (CTI), capitalizing on my extensive experience in leading and coaching teams. I am a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC) and an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) from the International Coaching Federation. Additionally, I completed the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program from the UMass Memorial Health Care Center and am a PQ Coach™ and active member of the Positive Intelligence program.
Outside of my professional life, I am passionate about competitive racquet sports such as tennis, squash, and table tennis. I volunteer as a squash assistant and tutor at Street Squash, a 501©(3) organization dedicated to providing consistent and reliable support to young people.
Further, I’ve used my Positive Intelligence training to coach previously incarcerated individualsto improve their performance and relationships. My involvement in these activities not only keeps me active but also allows me to give back to the community and support the development of future leaders. I’m also a stepfather to four adult children which has inspired me to begin writing a coaching guide on Step Fathering.
